Thuwal/Saudi Arabia – Strengthening its global collaboration with leading academic institutions, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Kaust) has formalized a strategic partnership with University College London (UCL) to advance research, education, and commercialization that address the needs of Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and the world.

As part of the memorandum of understanding, the two universities identified potential areas for collaboration, including student entrepreneurship and innovation, academic program development (e.g., joint Master of Business Administration programs), and joint activity in bioengineering fields such as vaccine manufacturing.

“Kaust is in the midst of a transformational phase, expanding its reach through international hubs designed to amplify research, enable translational innovation, and accelerate commercialization,” said Kaust President Sir Edward Byrne AC. “The U.K. — and London in particular — represents a vital node in that network, and UCL, with its outstanding capabilities in bioprocessing, health innovation, entrepreneurship, and global policy, is a natural partner in this endeavor.”

Partnering with another world-class university strengthens Kaust’s ability to advance Saudi Vision 2030 through education, research, and innovation at greater pace and scale.

Dr. Michael Spence, UCL president and provost, said his university recognizes the importance of equipping future leaders with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy. “This MOU with Kaust reflects our shared ambition to explore new models of collaboration, bringing together complementary strengths to advance entrepreneurial education and support innovation ecosystems across borders.”

Kaust’s Sir Edward and UCL’s Spence signed the agreement in October, when Spence led a senior delegation visit to the Middle East that included participation in the Times Higher Education (The) World Academic Summit 2025 held at Kaust.
