? Düperthal introduced hazardous material cabinets for active and passive storage many years ago. What does this mean?

Franz-Josef Hagen: We closely follow the definition of industry body, the BG RCI. Active storage is when the hazardous materials containers in the cabinet are also used as sampling or collection containers. By contrast, with passive storage the containers must always remain tightly sealed and may not be opened during storage, either for filling or emptying. Many users and operators may not even be aware that as soon as filling or transferral takes place or a container is not sealed, this is already a case of active storage. Therefore, we are the first manufacturer to develop cabinet lines and certified system solutions specially for active storage, with ventilation, monitoring and extraction.

? How is this active storage market developing?

Hagen: We have seen a constant increase in interest. The proportion of what we call blue products has grown continuously. Nevertheless, there is a place for both lines. Passive storage is not on the way out; we can just see the market becoming differentiated in the medium term. In addition to traditional catalogue ordering by the customer, the number of process-based solutions is on the rise.

? What does that mean specifically for Düperthal?

Hagen: Many business models are based on online selling — order the cabinet, sell, deliver, done. That is not our philosophy. We want contact with our customers as this is the only way to find new ideas and develop solutions for requirements ten or twenty years from now. In the future, customers will not focus so much on the features of the cabinets but on the peripherals, for example process efficiency.

Access to the cabinet can be restricted, so that only trained employees can gain access to the content. This is achieved by programmable access control and clear user profiles with corresponding privileges. This kind of system-controlled work with identification and door unlocking means defined health and safety standards, and also increases the legal security in the event of damage — e.g. evidence for training of internal and external employees can be retrieved digitally.

Digitally stored safety data sheets and instructions help here, they can be retrieved at any time. Consistent documentation used and storage schedules increases the safety of each individual employee as handling of hazardous substances is much more transparent.
