Darmstadt/Germany – Merck has collaborated with Lenovo Group, Hongkong, and Equinix, Redwood City, USA, to successfully launch a state-of-the-art high-performance computer in Munich, Germany, designed to accelerate innovation across the three business sectors of Merck: Life Science, Healthcare and Electronics. This initiative underscores the company’s commitment to digital innovation as a key enabler of scientific discovery.

This enables our scientists across all our sectors to conduct more experiments, accelerate development and deliver innovative treatments to patients and advanced technologies to customers – faster and more effectively.”

This initiative exemplifies the strategy that Merck is pursuing to embed digital capabilities across its businesses and production. Using high-performance computing, Merck aims to enhance product development in its Life Science business sector, streamline drug discovery processes in its Healthcare business sector and optimize the development of new, cutting-edge materials for the semiconductor industry in its Electronics business sector. This unified approach leads to more precise and tailored solutions for the unique challenges faced in each sector, minimizing fragmentation and fostering collaboration across teams.

Merck is creating an energy-efficient infrastructure that aligns with its sustainability goals. The supercomputer will support significant compute demands for managing complex artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning models.

Configured with Lenovo’s Thinksystem servers with advanced liquid cooling technology and located in an Equinix AI-ready data center in Munich, Germany, this HPC platform combines private and public cloud infrastructure. The hybrid cloud design also offers flexible, rapid scaling to meet varying computational demands.
